ANN ARBOR, MI - Nov. 8, 2010 – NuStep, Inc., the maker of the NuStep T4, T5 and T5XR Recumbent Cross Trainers is pleased to announce Westminster Canterbury Richmond, a senior living community in Richmond, Va. and Malley Senior Recreation Center, a senior center in Englewood, Colo. as the winners of the 2011 NuStep Pinnacle Award.
Established in 1998, the NuStep Pinnacle Award is a national award that recognizes excellence in whole-person wellness programming for older adults. Whole-person wellness, a multi-dimensional, interdependent model, promotes self-responsibility for wellness in all dimensions of one’s life including: physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and vocational.
Using the six dimensions of wellness as judging criteria, as well as onsite visits, the Pinnacle is awarded to the senior living community and senior center that best demonstrate a culture of whole-person wellness throughout their organizations.
“Westminster Canterbury Richmond and Malley Senior Recreation Center are excellent examples of organizations that understand and value the positive impact whole-person wellness programming has on the lives of older adults.” said Steve Sarns, vice president of sales and marketing for NuStep. “Their commitment to successful aging makes them models for older adult organizations across the country.”
In addition to the Pinnacle Award, winners receive: a NuStep T5XR Recumbent Cross Trainer for their facility; national recognition for the organization and their team; and exposure in national industry publications. A representative from each winning organization received airfare and a two-night hotel stay for the 2010 American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) conference held Nov. 1-3 in Los Angeles, Calif.About the Winners
Westminster Canterbury Richmond – Richmond, Virginia
Founded in 1975, Westminster Canterbury Richmond, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community (CCRC) of 900 residents in Richmond, Virginia, is the Pinnacle winner in the Senior Living division.
Nurturing the mind, body and spirit and promoting an active, independent lifestyle – whether residents, employees or staff – is the driving force behind all the programming and activity that takes place at Westminster Canterbury.
In 2006, the Wellness team introduced the six dimensions of wellness and a different approach to healthy aging with the initiative, WELL Connected (Wellness at Every Level of Life). The initiative was designed to increase the residents’ – whether in independent living, assisted living or nursing care – awareness of the multi-dimensional aspects of wellness and engage them in activities in the six dimensions of wellness.
Interdepartmental collaboration - from the Physician Services Department staff writing “wellness prescriptions” to the Dining and Catering Department working with a staff nutritionist to develop healthy meal options – keeps the focus on whole-person wellness throughout the community.
Westminster Canterbury’s commitment to wellness extends to employees and staff as well. With 24/7 access to the fitness center, numerous exercise classes, smoking cessation programs and bi-annual wellness challenges, the wellness programming for employees is equally comprehensive.
On-site day care and a Child Development Center, with a preschool and before/after school program, provide options for employees with young children and opportunities for intergenerational interaction between the residents and children.
“Westminster Canterbury Richmond is honored to be the 2011 NuStep Pinnacle Award winner,” said Westminster Canterbury Wellness Director, Robert Adkins. “Our focus and ongoing commitment has been to create a culture of wellness throughout our community. Winning this award affirmed our progress and how successful we have been at redefining and developing total person wellness at Westminster Canterbury. Through wellness programming for residents and staff we continue to support our vision of ‘improving the lives of those we serve every day.’”
Malley Senior Recreation Center – Englewood, Colorado
With a mission to ensure that “everyone who enters will be revived with a healthy mind, body and spirit,” the Malley Senior Recreation Center in Englewood, Colorado has been promoting active aging for 33 years.
The Pinnacle Award winner in the Senior Center division, Malley Senior Recreation Center is open to those 55 or older and membership is free. And with an active membership of 2100, a full-time staff of seven, a part-time staff that includes over 50 instructors and countless volunteers, the center is a hub of activity.
In 2001, the city of Englewood, which is located in the metropolitan Denver area, passed a recreation bond that provided funding to expand and renovate the recreation center. When completed in 2004, the facility had grown to 30,000 square feet with the addition of a new fitness center, computer lab, and gymnasium.
The fitness center is accessible to users of all ability levels and features senior-friendly exercise equipment. To ensure proper equipment use, new participants must attend an orientation, led by a certified personal trainer, before receiving a pass that gives them access to the fitness center.
All six dimensions of wellness are represented in the programs and activities at Malley and there is a requirement that every activity address at least one of the dimensions. Wellness seminars are offered throughout the year to continue educating and empowering members to take charge of their health and wellness.
Facility/Program Director at Malley Senior Recreation Center, Joe Sack commented, “It is an honor to be selected for the 2011 Pinnacle Award. It is our mission to have everyone who enters the Malley Recreation Center be revived with a healthy mind, body and spirit. We are a resource in helping individuals improve their personal wellness. It is validating to be recognized for our efforts, and to be able to share this award with our members. Thank you for this recognition!”
